Work Package 8:
Clinical Studies

After we have developed a prototype system to provision genetically matched blood to patients we will need to show that it can work and that it will improve clinical outcomes for patients.

We anticipate performing a feasibility study in a small number of hospitals to show that the new system is operationally possible.

Following this, we will perform a randomised trial to assess whether extended red cell matching improves treatment outcomes relative to the present system.

We will need to obtain funding and formal ethical approval for these studies.
If the randomised trial shows a benefit large enough to justify the cost of a new system, then with NHSBT we will seek to initiate the changes required to update the standard of care in the NHS.
